Who the XL Multi+ is for
The XL Multi+ is the large-format METClean platform for heavy-duty, fleet, plant and agricultural workshops. Filters from trucks, buses, tractors and plant are longer and heavier than car and van filters, and they need a working space and handling that a car-sized cabinet can’t give.
It suits a business that cleans heavy-duty filters regularly, either its own fleet’s or as a service to operators nearby. Control is through a PLC with an operator panel (HMI), so the cleaning programme runs the same way whichever technician loads the machine.
The XL Multi+ is also presented as a multi-service machine, and the supplied demonstration film shows other components being cleaned as well as DPFs. Each of those services is still being confirmed for this model, so buy it for heavy-duty DPF work and treat the rest as something to check with us.
Not the right fit if- A garage that cleans only car and van filters, where the S or the E is a better fit for the space and the price.
- Cleaning from a van. The V is the METClean designed around a vehicle installation.
- A workshop without the space, power or lifting arrangements to handle large filters safely.
- Filters that are cracked, melted or otherwise damaged. Cleaning removes ash and soot; it doesn’t repair a substrate.
- METClean S
- Your work is car and light commercial filters and you want automatic cleaning, a pressure pre-test and a printed record in a smaller cabinet.
- METClean E
- You clean car and van filters only, on a tighter budget, and simple analogue control with a cold-air purge is enough.
Filters and parts it takes
The XL Multi+ is built for large-format diesel particulate filters from HGVs, buses, plant and agricultural machinery. The filter connects to the stainless braided wash hose at its outlet through an adaptor, so water runs through it against the normal exhaust direction, and a pneumatic clamping ram holds it in the chamber facing away from the door.
Heavy-duty filters vary widely in length, diameter and fittings, and some arrive with pipes, brackets or sensor cables attached. Send us the filters you see most often, or bring one to a demonstration, and we’ll confirm how it is held and connected. The confirmed vehicle classes for this model are awaiting approval.

A normal job, start to finish
The sequence below follows the METClean XL operating instructions, which MET uses for the XL Multi+ until a dedicated manual is published. Times and settings are adjustable on the operator panel; MET’s recommended values are covered in training.
- Check the machine. Power and compressed air connected, the tank full and the machine level. The filter shouldn’t be heavily contaminated with oil or coolant before it goes in.
- Inspect and lift. Check the filter for cracks, melting or oil soaking and work out its exhaust flow direction. Move heavy-duty filters with suitable lifting equipment, not by hand.
- Connect and clamp. Fit an adaptor to the filter outlet, secure any pipes and cables, and clamp it to the braided wash hose. Position the filter by the clamping ram, lock it with the toggle lever facing away from the door, and double-check it is secure.
- Pre-test. Air is passed through the filter to give a back-pressure reading of the filter as it arrived: the before figure for your customer or fleet record.
- Close and clean. Close the pneumatic door with the two-handed control, then start the automatic clean: prewash, main wash and high-pressure impact. An audible alert and a flashing beacon signal the end.
- Dry. Swap from the wash hose to the drying hose and run the hot dry, with adjustable time and temperature. A cold-air purge also clears residual water at the end of the cycle.
- Test, print and return. A final reading gives the after figure, and the printout records your company, the technician, the customer and the filter’s serial number. Lift the filter out and refit or return it.
Throughput depends on the programme you run, how loaded each filter is, and the time spent lifting and connecting large components. Cycle duration isn’t published while MET confirms measured profiles, so plan capacity with us from your own fleet or customer mix.
A heavily saturated filter, mainly a combined DPF and catalyst, may not dry fully in the machine; the instructions say it then needs a drying oven or a driving cycle on the vehicle. For a fleet, the useful question is how many filters you need back in service each week, and whether spare filters on the shelf would keep vehicles moving.

Built for heavy components
What the XL Multi+ does at each stage, following the XL operating instructions, and what each result does and doesn’t tell you.
- Control
- A PLC with an operator panel (HMI) runs the cleaning programme, so each job follows the same sequence whichever technician loads the machine.PLC/HMI
- Cleaning
- A soft start at low pressure, then the main wash and timed high-pressure bursts through the filter against the exhaust direction. Ash and soot leave with the water into the machine’s filtration.
- Drying
- Hot drying through a separate drying hose, with adjustable time and temperature, plus a cold-air purge. Some filters still need finishing in an oven or on the vehicle.
- Testing and reporting
- A back-pressure reading before and after the clean, and a printout with the job details. Readings show change on your machine; they don’t certify a filter.
- Other services
- The demonstration film shows other components being cleaned. Each service and its programme is awaiting confirmation, so check yours with us before relying on it.

Closed-loop water and waste handling
The XL Multi+ operates as a closed-loop system. Water is held in the machine tank, with approved cleaning product where specified, and pumped through the component against the exhaust direction during the cleaning cycle. The returning water goes back to the machine, not to a drain, and passes through the machine’s filtration and settlement system, which captures soot, ash and other contamination before the water is circulated again. One tank fill supports multiple cleaning cycles rather than water being discharged continuously.
When the water reaches the end of its useful service, the machine is isolated and emptied following the operating and maintenance instructions. Used water, sediment, sludge and spent filters are kept and disposed of through your approved waste-disposal route, treated as you would used coolant or engine oil, never to ground, surface water or an ordinary drain. The tank, filter housings and reusable filters are cleaned before the machine is refilled. A closed loop reuses water; it doesn’t make the process waste-free.
- Step 1: TankFilled with the required volume of water, plus approved cleaning product where specified.
- Step 2: PumpWater runs through the component against the exhaust direction.
- Step 3: Component in the chamberWater leaving the component returns to the machine, not to a drain.
- Step 4: Filtration and settlementCaptures soot, ash and contamination before the water recirculates.
- Step 5: End of serviceIsolate, empty, retain water, sediment and spent filters for approved disposal. Clean tank and filters, then refill.

XL Multi+ or the S?
The S is the nearest alternative for a workshop whose filters are mostly from cars and vans. The deciding question is the size of the filters you clean, not how many.
- METClean S: Your work is car and light commercial filters and you want automatic cleaning, a pressure pre-test and a printed record in a smaller cabinet.
- METClean E: You clean car and van filters only, on a tighter budget, and simple analogue control with a cold-air purge is enough.

Owning an XL Multi+
Delivery, installation and training
Before delivery we agree the site with you: where the machine will stand, how it comes in through the building, the electrical supply and protective device, compressed air, water and drainage, and how large filters will be lifted in and out. Delivery and installation are included: we deliver the XL Multi+, install it and set it up with your team.
On-site training is included and happens on your machine: connecting and clamping heavy-duty filters, the pre-test, choosing and running programmes on the operator panel, hot drying and printing, and the daily checks that keep the water and filters in condition. Train more than one technician so cleaning doesn’t depend on one person.
Maintenance and parts
Day to day, the operator keeps the chamber clear, checks the hoses and filter housings, and watches the water condition. When the water is changed, the machine is isolated and emptied, and the filter elements are cleaned or replaced following MET’s maintenance instructions for this model.
Replacement filter elements, adaptors and other consumables come from the MET shop. Keep the machine’s serial number to hand when ordering parts.
Warranty and support
The XL Multi+ has a twelve-month warranty. If a fault can’t be put right with our help over the phone or remotely, an engineer comes to your site. Service and extended warranty plans are available on request, and cover depends on following the safety and operating instructions.
When you ask for help, send the model and serial number, the programme that was running, any alarm shown on the operator panel, and a photo of the screen and the component. It is usually the quickest way to a fix.
