Give regeneration the conditions your vehicle requires
Regeneration is the process that burns soot from the filter. The conditions and instructions vary between vehicles, so follow the vehicle handbook.
Short journeys can make it harder for the required conditions to be reached. However, a longer drive is not a universal answer to a DPF warning. Check what the warning means for your vehicle before deciding what to do.
Use the correct oil and keep maintenance up to date
Use the engine oil specification required by the vehicle manufacturer and keep to the service schedule. Oil additives contribute to the ash that remains in the filter after regeneration.
Excessive oil consumption or an upstream engine fault needs investigation. A cleaned filter can become contaminated again if the cause remains.
Deal with the cause of repeated blockages
A DPF warning can be associated with the filter itself, the way the vehicle is used or a fault elsewhere in the system. Repeated cleaning is not a substitute for diagnosis.
Tell the workshop about warning lights, previous cleaning or regeneration attempts, oil consumption and any changes in how the vehicle runs. That history helps the technician assess the problem.
Understand what driving cannot remove
Regeneration can burn soot, but ash remains inside the filter. When ash accumulation requires attention, it needs a suitable physical removal process.
METClean’s off-vehicle cleaning process is designed to carry deposits out of a serviceable filter. Cleaning cannot repair a cracked or melted substrate.
Can a treatment keep a DPF clean?
Products and procedures have specific applications. Do not assume that a treatment removes ash or corrects the fault responsible for a blockage.
In normal daily use, METClean DPF One Shot is used for on-vehicle cleaning and with the METClean Lite. METClean may also advise using One Shot during the cleaning process with any machine where a filter is contaminated with oil or sludge. Follow the instructions for the intended application and contact METClean for the appropriate amount and model-specific procedure.
After a professional clean
Ask the workshop what caused the restriction, what was found during assessment and whether any further repair is needed. Follow the vehicle’s maintenance guidance and return for diagnosis if the warning reappears.
The aim is to restore a serviceable filter and address the reason it became blocked.
Owner checklist
- Follow the vehicle’s service schedule.
- Use the specified engine oil.
- Read the handbook’s DPF warning and regeneration guidance.
- Investigate excessive oil consumption and recurring warnings.
- Keep a record of previous cleaning and repairs.
- Ask for diagnosis when the same problem returns.
Need a filter looked at?
A METClean specialist can assess the filter, find what caused the blockage and advise on the right next step.
